Developing Heifers into Good Cows

To have a productive cow it takes a good heifer development program. Much like our bull development we pride ourselves on producing great cows. We focus on phenotype and performance in our females.

Our ideal cow would weigh between 1200 and 1300 pounds, breed back annually, wean a 500 to 550 lbs calf and be structurally correct. These are all the goals we work towards in genetics, heifer development and female retention. Our cows need to calve on their own and raise a calf with minimal nutritional assistance.

Our registered cows are running right alongside our commercial cow herd. They must be efficient like commercial cows or they won’t remain in our program long. Our cow-calf pairs are on fescue pastures and fescue forage in the winter, which adds another selection pressure on our herd. Our herd bulls that we use on registered cattle are also used on our commercial females.

We wean our calves and begin sorting (on paper) which females will be retained and which females will be sold at the livestock market. The females we are retaining are then moved to pasture and may be supplemented, depending on the pasture conditions until breeding season is complete. They are then integrated into our main herd.
