Developing Bulls

Our bull development program is solely focused on producing bulls our customers want. When we first started selling bulls we listened to what customers were wanting and changed our program to meet their needs. It all starts with bull selection, the AI and herd sires we use are selected from an EPD spread and phenotype that we believe matches best with our herd and our end goals.

Next our registered cows are running right alongside our commercial cow herd. They must be efficient like commercial cows or they won’t remain in our program long. Our cow-calf pairs are on fescue pastures and fescue forage in the winter, which adds another selection pressure on our herd. Our herd bulls that we use on registered cattle are also used on our commercial females.

When we wean our commercial calves and registered calves, they are all fed together. They are fed a high roughage diet along with a corn and 32% supplement between 8 to 20lbs per day depending on their weight. When we sell our commercial calves we get immediate feedback about our herd bull selection, again giving us feedback from another source.

We like to cull, if a bull wouldn’t work for us, why would we expect them to work for our customers? Our bulls need to be athletic and in a condition that allows them to work right out of the gate. They need to be sound and able to handle the pastures conditions of Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska (our primary customer markets.)

The Right Nutrition

When designing a development program we worked with a nutritionist from Blair Feeds, our feed supplier. He understood the importance of maximizing performance and keeping in mind our goals. We were very impressed with our feed quality and company relationship that we were proud to Blair Feeds as an authorized dealer for their products.
